There are a few roles in the data space that might confuse people. I break this down into
Data Analytics, and
These four roles work together and generate business value from data. But, If you are a beginner in these areas, I suggest that we master these fields one by one.
Next, I will give a brief description of those four, to let you know which area is the most suitable for you.
According to Wikipedia, Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data, and apply knowledge and actionable insights from data across a broad range of application domains.
- Degree in quantitative field
Data Scientist general has a degree in a quantitative field. So if you are studying in a quantitative field, including mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. It’s going to be a lot easier for you to learn Data Science. Compare if you come from a social field.
Data scientists are programmers. Yes, it’s right! You need to know how to program in languages like Python, R, and create SQL queries and stuff like that.
- Curious Personalities
Data Scientists by personality are curious people. They are curious about why something happens. They are more interested in why over how. Imagine when we try to find out a pattern or correlation or trend, it usually indicates why something is happening, not how it’s happening. When we understand why something is happening then we can continue to make a prediction based on the WHY something is happing.
- Business common sense
If you have business experience, business common sense, business data analysis and data-driven decision making, then you might a good candidate to learn data science.
- Spends hours analyzing complex questions.
Data Scientist will spend hours, days or even weeks, analyzing complex questions.
- Derive insights from the data, including big data (data from data engineer systems).
If you are a beginner then You don’t need to worry about big data for now.
In Typical cases, the data scientist next derives that information from the data that sitting in the data engineer systems.
- Uncover correlations and causations in business data to support business decision-making.
In business, this is usually called business decision support.
- Generate predictions from data and communicate predictions through data visualization.
